Can I give my 5mo finger food?

Or should I just stick to purees til 6 months? She is picking everything up and reaching for anything possible to put in her mouth - but is it better to wait until 6m for food that she holds?

Well put it in front of her - if she picks it up she's ready!

If she's showing all the signs of being ready for weaning then go for it. As she's on puree already I don't think it makes a difference.

I started BLW at 5 months - ds could eat veg, rice cakes, toast, banana.

Thank you all!

My 5 mo started with clementine segments and brocolli! Then came banana, roast butternut squash, sweet potato, red pepper and she loves it all so far. No much goes down really, only the odd mouthful, but she's only 5.5 months now so we're not in any rush. If she wants to explore food, let her, but don't worry if most of it just gets mushed and smeared about to begin with.

This thread is encouraging!!!

DD is just over 4 months (bust she was born at 42 weeks) and has started reaching out to grab all my food. Today I let her have a stick of cucumber for the very first time (I was eating it as a snack with tzatziki, which I didn't let her have!)... and she LOVED it! She sucked of all the inside seeds off one and then took another!

What else is good and not "chokable"? gourd - roast squash etc sounds good!

I am keen to do mostly BLW but alongside some spoon feeding. However, I read the article in the BMJ on 22nd Jan (we get the GP version of the BMJ) and, as a result of that, want to start weaning in a couple of weeks rather than waiting till 6 months. Also feel its right because DD is on 99.6th centile and currently needing breast feeds (she's ebf) every 2 hours, night and day, has done for 4 weeks... somewhat exhausting

Has anyone else tried this sort of combination weaning before 6 months? the BLW book is very forcefully "wait till 6 months", which I have decided not to do with DD, and the leaflets etc at the HV clinic are all focussed around purees only, which I am also not keen on!! A little confused here...!
