hi, when should i start giving finger foods and what should i start with? My d.d is 7 months but has no teeth yet so i am nervous about giving her stuff that is not in puree form, altho i am sure she would love something to nibble on. Cheers.

Hi there. Finger foods are OK from 6 months if you follow a few rules.
Google "Baby led weaning". This is what we did with DD and I'm a convert!

cheers will do.

Finger foods definitely ok for your 7 month old, and don't worry about no teeth. DD didn't get any until 10 months but managed to BLW herself just fine. The gums are really hard and quite knobbly at the back so all good for chewing.

Thanks RJandA. What kind of stuff should i start with, toast, bananas?

Toast or rice cakes cut into strips are good - you can get all sorts of toppings on there.

Roast veg sticks.

Pasta quills with sauce on

Basically anything that you can get into a stick approx 2cm long. Definitely google Baby Led Weaning - there's a very good blog by Aitch (MNer) around and you can get lots of ideas for finger foods from there.

Banana can constipate babies though, so perhaps give that in moderation!

Talou1 · 07/02/2011 17:09

I didn't know that about bananas! Cheers for all your help everyone. I will get the toast out tonight and check out the web. Can't get my head round that she is eating. They grow up too fast!

Basically, you can give her whatever you fancy! It's a learning process for both of you and you'll soon get an idea of what she can manage.
