We were going to give DD (5.5 months) some finger food today as she is showing all the signs of readiness. Very worried about choking - what can people recommend as a good first finger foods for nervous parents? :-)

Brocolli florets are good - can hold the stem and nibble the tops!

I gave ds banana at first but he found it too slippery. Roast parsnips and pumpkin has been good too, and steamed carrot sticks. Though he does bite of bits of carrot and they emerge the other end undigested.

I second carrot sticks. Also found roast sweet potato wedges pretty good. Chunks of peppers too.

Thanks - all good ideas so far!

I gave DS watermelon - they were the last thing I ate while pregnant (in labour, in fact), so it seemed appropriate.

They are still a favourite with him.

Mango wedges

Another vote for roast veg. Butternut squash was quite a favourite I think.

Or sticks of steamed carrot.

Fruit has been a favourite with my dd, particularly a ripe pear cut into strips. And as she has got better with coordination - half grapes and clementine segments.

Thanks everyone - we tried banana but it was a bit of a fail as too slippery...will try some other suggestions as soon as highchair arrives..
