Quick one - is tahini (sesame) Ok to give a 6 month old?

I was going to make hummous and I usually add tahini (sesame seed paste). Is that Ok to give my 6month old - we've just started BLW. I know nuts are out of bounds but was unsure about seeds. My friend who is nut allergic is also allergic to sesame seeds. Any ideas? Thanks!

nuts arent out of bounds as in if there are no allergies then nut products e.g. peanut butter is ok from 6 months too (whole nuts not recommended before age 5 due to choking risk). You could try putting a little on your lo's skin and see if there is any reaction to that before he/she eats any

Putiting it on her skin won't necessarily help as it can be subsequent exposures that cause a reaction.

It's just whole nuts that are out of bounds - other than avoiding honey and salt, a 6 month old can eat anything you do.

I'm on the EAT food-allergy study at St Thomas' hospital, and DS is in the early intervention group, and he's been given tahini to eat from 17 weeks. So yes, you can feed your DS houmus. Just don't add salt to it.

So peanut butter is OK? I was told not by HV due to allergy risk? Hope so as banana and peanut butter sandwiches are my fave and would be nice to share!

Only if you have a family history of allergies.

Seona1973 · 21/01/2011 14:29

the guidance about peanuts was changed in 2009 and it is now considered ok to eat them in pregnancy and to give from 6 months when weaning.

Peanuts during pregnancy, breastfeeding and early childhood

Peanut butter also fine unless your baby is allergic.
