My husband bought a range of baby foods today, he thought we could try them ourselves to see what we will be feeding our baby when we eventually wean her (I thought this was very sweet )

The jars were meant from 4 months onwards, but they all contain chicken or beef. So now I'm confused - I thought they couldn't have meat until 6 months??

It's the saem with eggs. Not meant to be given until baby is 6 months but the 4 months plus jars often list in the ingredients egg. You just have to read the labels carefully

megandmogwai · 16/10/2005 19:56

can't believe this! I HAVE NO INTENTION OF FEEDING MY BABY READY MADE FOOD - maybe in emergencies!

As I said earlier!

Though I have no problem with anyone who does!

It was my husband who brought the stuff home! As I said earlier! Flippin' eck!

My point was, I'm confused about giving her meat and dairy because, although the advice say not to, the manufacturers use it in their products.

Sorry if it calls for a thud or if it's a boring topic. I was asking a genuine question because I am genuinely confused. And yes, I know the advice is six months. Now THAT calls for a thud.

(and I've reverted to my original name of mogwai, though this is my halloween name )

Hi M&M - like your Hallowe'en name!

Jars contain meat, etc, because the manufacturers know they can sell it. Not everyone chooses to wean at 6 months, many, many people do it before - and until it is illegal to label food as "suitable from 4 months", they will continue to do so.

As and when labelling laws are brought into line with the recommendations for not weaning before 6 months, this won't be an issue.

Jars just another thing for mums to be snobby about, IME

CarolinaFullMoon · 16/10/2005 20:20

I'm dead snobby, me. Smug mummy and proud!

megandmogwai · 16/10/2005 20:48

I just don't eat much ready made stuff myself, I don't think it's a snobby thing for me, it's more about wanting some control over what we eat as a family.

But then again, I'm a suspicious type!

Yesterday I was parked outside a branch of McDonalds, and as it was saturday afternoon, the place was filling up with parents herding their children inside. So I'm there thining "that's right, you get them good and addicted to the shit they serve in there and hey presto, another generation lining Mr McDonald's pocket!"

That was when I realised motherhood is turning me into a cynical nutter

aloha · 16/10/2005 20:50

I don't see any thuds or people calling it a boring topic..?

megandmogwai · 16/10/2005 20:59

yes aloha, someone said it called for a thud, read it back

megandmogwai · 16/10/2005 21:00

carolinafullmoon, friday, 8.54 pm

megandmogwai · 16/10/2005 21:05

actually it's quite a funny thread isn't it?

Friday 11.05 "make your own - you already know what carrots taste like" good point

Friday 8.54 "baby food manufacturers aren't your mate, they are out to make money from you" - really? Oh no, I send them christmas cards....I feel such a fool

My god, I love mumsnet. You can ask a perfectly reasonable question and get lots of lovely replies assuming you are a total moron

hunkerpumpkin · 16/10/2005 23:20

Brilliant, isn't it, M&M!

"I want to wean my baby."
"OK, but don't let them eat coal or iron filings or kippers past their use-by-date."

And I'll cross Heinz and C&G off my Xmas card list too - bloody hell, I feel an idiot now

megandmogwai · 17/10/2005 08:13

good job we have mumsnet hunker

But seriously, this thread has got me thinking....what about the queen? Is she the head of state or my best friend? . And then there's Geri Halliwell....is she a self-promoting, self- obsessed mother-to-be or was she the dinner lady at my primary school???

and what about Moira Stewart? Is she a newsreader or my nextdoor neighbour?

I'm so bloody confused!

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 17/10/2005 08:47

megandmogwai (GREAT name btw) have you considered the possibility that you may be confused because you were weaned too early??

flamebat · 17/10/2005 08:55

Pmsl - I don't think that can be the cause for confusion... I was weaned at 6 months, and I am always confused about everything

megandmogwai · 18/10/2005 08:01

Ok I've taken the plunge. Made her a beef sandwich this morning. She struggled with it a bit though - I think it was the kettle chips that hurt her mouth?

Actually, yes, it was probably a bit too early for weaning. I'll wait until after 8am tomorrow
