Can I use cups instead of bottles for my 6mo

I'm just starting weaning with my DD who is 6 months old this week. I'm also going to stop BFing gradually over the next few weeks.

She has had one bottle a day of EBM just before bedtime, and the occaisonal bottle when I am out so is used to a bottle. However, I only have 2 bottles, and don't want to have to fork out for more, if I can get her straight onto cups for her milk feeds. Has any got any experience of this?

Also, is weaning and stopping BFing at the same time too much for a 6mo, or should I get the feeding well established first?

At 6mo, my DD was still having 6-7 milk feeds over 24 hours. I was also still sterilising.

I guess it depends on a lot of things:

What milk she will be having...presumably formula?
What sort of cups you're planning to use?
Will she actually take her milk feed from a cup? DD still will not take a proper milk feed out of anything other than a bottle at 17 months
How you are planning to wean? If BLW, she will probably still be on a LOT of milk for a while yet

We stopped sterilising at six months (shock horror!) so I would just wash up the bottles then you can still give her bottles for milk but don't have to buy anymore, obviously if you aren't happy to stop sterilising then don't, but as justalittle says I don't know many little ones who would drink a full feed from a cup

Thanks for the help. I was planning to stop BFing and move to formula, but I have found that, ever since I started her on solids she has been sick a lot. She was never a sicky baby - only the occaisional throw up, but in the last week she has been throwing up 2 or 3 times after each feed, so I've decided to stick with BFing for a bit longer until weaning is established.

Hi,

my eldest (now 2.5) refused the bottle point blank but a week before I was due back at work he accepted a little sippy cup (is that what you call them). Boots sell them in different sizes, it is the smallest one from 4 months I think? Worked a treat for him. His sister, now 7 months-we did the same as she wasn't really used to the bottle we thought we'd skip the bottle all together.

By the way, ahev you considered still BFing first thing in the morning and at bed time? Did that with no 1 until he was 11 months old (and going on a hen weekend..) and now doing it too. Anyway, hope your LO is feeling better?

Thanks for the pointer meisje, this info is useful to me. I EBF DS who has been weaning since 6 months but won't take milk from the bottle at 8.5 months (though my DP and I haven't been particulatly pushing the issue as we wondered whether it was really necessary).

I shall try the cups you suggest, I hope it doen't prove too late. At what age did you first try the cups with your eldest?
