What finger food does your little one like? My ds is really enjoying exploring foods and I am just looking for inspiration for more ideas please

Mine's a couple of months younger than yours, but so far roasted veg sticks (carrots, parsnip, squash) have been a big hit. Broccoli - ready made handle and he likes nibbling the top. Bananas, fusili pasta. Sorry, those probably aren't very exciting!

Depends how much mess you like, mine is 10 months and eats nearly everything with fingers. Cottage pie, rice and sauce, scrambled egg, porridge, you'll be surprised what they can manage to scoop up with their little fists even before they get pincer grip.

Other ideas:

anything on toast is always good,
flakes of fish,
slices of fruit,
orange segments,
bits of cheese,
a casserole with chunky veg and slow cooked meat so it's falling apart

Thanks. This may be a daft question, but can they just have slices of fruit - apple, pear etc uncooked or does it need to be cooked to soften?

For an apple or a hard pear I would steam it slightly (you can do this in the microwave, in a tupperware with a dash of water) to soften, for a ripe pear I would just give raw slices.

Go gently and you'll soon see what your DS can manage.

My lo is 8 months next week and some examples so far are;

Rice cakes with cream cheese
Breadsticks and dips
Bread soldiers with cheese spread/jam
Fingers of cheese
Sticks of carrot
Brocolli florets - easy to hold but messy lol
Fingers of cucumber
Fish fingers (without crumb/batter)
Organix Snacks - loves them!
Pieces of chicken
Fruit e.g. banana, peach - hard to hold though so I usually end up chopping them and feeding her fruit

Also going to try quartered tomato, omelette could be good too, boiled egg, may look for some other crackers if can find low/non-salted ones- need some inspiration myself though as I rely on unsalted rice crackers at the moment as she seems to love them (I hate them, they stink! lol).

bluesmile10 · 10/01/2011 21:24

Thanks for your ideas - sympathise with the rice crackers!!!!
