how much salt is ok

was gonna give dd some soup it has 0.3 salt in it is this ok shes 6 months

They can have up to a gram at this age but that isn't v much, so you have to be on alert as it sneaks in all over the place.

is that 1g per day

Yes up to 1g per day - bear in mind though that if the packet says 'sodium' you need to double it to find out what that is in salt.

'Babies need only a very small amount of salt - less than 1g a day up to 12 months. Their kidneys can't cope with larger amounts of salt.'

'The daily recommended maximum for children depends on their age:

• 1 to 3 years - 2 g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
• 4 to 6 years - 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
• 7 to 10 years - 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
• 11 and over - 6g salt a day (2.5g sodium)'

but that means her baby food puts her over the limit

Does it have added salt then?

jarred baby food doesnt normally have added salt - it just has naturally occuring sodium in it. You have to times the sodium by 2.5 to get the salt content e.g. 0.3g of sodium = 0.75g of salt (0.3x2.5).

Is it 'normal' adult tinned soup you are giving as that would have lots of added salt?

yeah was gonna give her some sweet potatoe and something soup by hinz

A small amount every now and then is probably ok but I would watch the salt content in the other foods you give that day too. I never gave tinned soup till dd was over 1 year as I was a bit paranoid about salt!!
