BLW - can I actually give him what he wants?

DS (5.5 months) has started going potty for food. I know I'm supposed to wait until 6 months but he keeps trying to grab things off my plate so I figure that's the BL of the BLW right there.
This has been a particular nuisance when I've been eating out. Can I just let him grab the bits of salad he seems to want? I seem to remember I'm supposed to start him off on sticks of veggies or something?
I'm terrified of him choking. What do I need to watch for?
