When did you introduce snacks?

That is, if you introduced solids relatively slowly so as not to lead to your bf baby weaning early from the breast.

We do BLW but still just give 3 meals now (10 months) but I'm wondering whether I should start doing some snacks too. He's been eating 3 meals a day since 6 months. DS has 5-7 bfs during the daytime (as well as several at night)

My DD was still BFing quite a lot at that age, maybe not as much as yours in the day (but plenty at night!). She started really having snacks at about 12 mo I think. Now 15 mo and needs them. Still BF but asks for food in the day (signing) rather than milk (usually). I think snacks got easier once eating got a bit less messy. It meant not having to do the full clean up so many times!

That's just made me realise that she nearly always needs only one outfit per day now. Not so long ago it was at least three!

Thanks, that's useful.

Yes, it's pretty messy still - definitely a high chair and bib job.

I find it impossible to know when he's hungry for either bf or solids, which is why I've kept offering bf as often as I used to, since he never refuses! He will feed less often if we're out, just more at a time.

He does sign, but only 'all gone', which isn't much help. Grin

DD's signing didn't take off till around 12 mo. Sounds like you and DS have got the balance right to me. However, our HV (nursery nurse actually) at 12 mo checks told BF/ BLW friend and I that we HAD to give up BF and give snacks instead. Obviously we ignored her!

Yes, I heard a HV today tell another mum to go 'cold turkey' and refuse to feed her 10 m.o. more than once a day. :(

I'll stick with what we're doing for the time being then - bf is a lot less hassle than solids! :)

Think we started a month or so ago (DS now 10 months) because I wanted a snack and as soon as DS saw it, he wanted it!!! (he is obsessed with eating what we eat)

But do what works for you. And ignore the HV. Honestly people bang on and on about the benefits of bf but there seems to be a total lack of support for continuing in the real world beyond 6 months or so

Sorry rant over now!
