Dairy/ Soya allergy/ poor-eater and weaning

My ds is just starting to taste a few things, not much, so I went to look at the baby food section in boots and it seems EVERYTHING had milk in. Even baby rice. All bloody advertised their added milk. I wasn't planning to only feed him 'baby food' but I hoped to use it sometimes for ease of use.

Has anyone else weaning an allergic baby? Were there any favourite first foods? I'm a little worried about getting enough fat into him in the future (he's already above the 98th centile for length and at the 2nd for weight and still slowly dropping, he's lost weight 3 weeks running).

He's had a few teaspoons of potato and carrot mash but I've stopped for now as he's gone off it. Initially he demanded the spoon, loved the game of chewing but sadly it now showing signs of being adverse to it. He hides his face, turns away and clamps his mouth shut instead of leaning forward with his mouth open as before. I don't want to force the issue so I've stopped as soon as he stopped. DH gave him one spoon when I was out and vomited in protest. He has refused to eat properly since acid reflux problems after birth and pain from allergy. He can eat as little as 12oz a day but occasionally eats over 20. He's nearly 6 months.

Hello strawberrycake

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about allergies and don't have any advice to offer you. Just thought you might like a bit of moral support since nobody else has responded yet.

It all sounds very stressful. From my place (of ignorance) it sounds as if you are doing the right thing by not forcing him, but the weight loss must be a worry.

I hope that things are improving since you wrote this and that someone with knowledge and experience will come along and write something. Best wishes to you. Smile

PS You might try posting in the Allergies section - I just did a quick search on 'allergy' and 'weaning' and quite a few threads came up like this one, for instance

Ther are milk free baby foods you just have to look a bit harder for them. Hipp banana rice pudding is a good first food.

My ds was also allergic to milk and soya and was a nightmare to wean. He was 9 months before he ate anything of consequence, which was very stressful. The best thing you can do is to try and relax and follow his lead. The three spoon trick helped us, one fir each of the babys hands and one for you. Eventually some will go in.

In terms of fat content, I did mash with loads of pure spread in, White sauces with pure and oatly. The oatly cream is slap pretty good, you can whizz it up with fruit to make a dessert. Bird's eye custard powder made up with oatly is also good.
Fattier meats like lamb and salmon also good.
