What can I do to nip this one in the bud and quickly??

Its mostly sloppy things like yoghurt, porridge and weetabix that he does it with. He just started to do it a few days ago.

Do all babies go through this phase??

He's experimenting it's normal. I sympathise as I can't stand mess. Maybe take it away after he starts doing it? If he was hungry he'd be eating it.

I would just ignore it (its normal), IME you should be letting him 'play' with his food as much as possible, it encourages a healthy attitude towards food in the long run.

Its not about hunger at this stage, its all new to him and you should try and foster a fun approach to food ( even if it goes against your need to clean!)

My DS did this for a couple of weeks at roughly the same age. We just ignored it and refused to smile laugh and if he did it three times then we just took the food away as he clearly wasn't hungry. He stopped all by himself pretty much overnight so I suspect that your DS will do the same in a couple of weeks :)
