Q re FF and Jarred Foods

V strange and boring question - I have a reason for asking tho' and no point of reference.

Quite simply:

Is it possible / likely for a 6 month old baby to be able to get through 3 x 900g cartons of formula, 31 jars of food and 3 packets (of 12) of rusks in 6 days?

I suspect it's going to come down to how big / hungry the baby is and that I cant answer (never met the baby) but any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

sounds an awful lot and a lot of sugar too (the rusks are up to 30% sugar)

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 27/09/2010 11:14

I've never used either so it's hard for me to say. But, at 6 months my DC both needed +/- 1 liter of expressed breast milk per 24 hour period when I was away, so, to me it sound like too little formula rather than too much.

As far as the food goes, it does sound like a lot but I've no idea really. It would be a shocking amount of sugar for a baby to consume.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 27/09/2010 11:16

Oh, 900g cartons, sorry I read it as 900ml cartons. No idea who much milk that would be. Sorry.

LtEveDallas · 27/09/2010 11:25

I hear you on the sugar - I was quite surprised myself.

Fermina.. The 900g is dried powder to be made up, but I dont know how many ltrs of actual milk each box would provide.

I think I understand the jars - 1 breakfast, 1 lunch 1 pudding, 1 dinner 1 pudding - so 5 a day is about right (even if baby only had a mouthful of each, the jar would have to be thrown afterwards I assume?? - but would they have that much milk on top?

(DD was BF and wasn't a very hungry baby when first weaning so I cant really guess)

900g - is that a standard sized box of powder? At that age, we were getting through a box a fortnight, if I remember right - at the very most, a box a week.

DS was having 5 x 7oz/8oz bottles a day (which was pretty much exactly what was recommended for his age), plus meals but we'd only just started weaning and didn't use jars then so I've no idea if that's excessive.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of formula though. And 36 rusks in 6 days?! That's 6 rusks a day!

I'm intrigued to know why you are asking, but even for a big, hungry baby (and DS was both!) that sounds like way too much.

LtEveDallas · 27/09/2010 12:14

BorntoFolk, thank you, that was exactly the kind of answer I wanted - ie an example of how much a FF baby really had. I thought it sounded excessive, but because I didn't use Formula I wasnt sure.

Plus when DD was weaned I just used to boil up veg n stuff, but for the first month I was lucky if she'd have more than a couple of mouthfuls - I remember thinking at the time that the 6 mth jars in the supermarket were HUGE compared to what DD was having - really upset me Sad (PFB!)

Thanks for your help, it's nothing really too interesting mind, I'm querying an expenses claim - think someone is trying to bluff me!

ah, I thought it might be something like that!
I really can't see how one baby could drink all the formula in such a short space of time...unless they are constantly making up huge bottles which the baby doesn't drink and end up getting thrown away but even then, it sounds like a lot.

pommedeterre · 27/09/2010 13:30

Each scoop represents an oz of made up formula (or actually a little more in reality). Each scoop weighs 4.6g. Therefore in 2700g of formula you have at least 587 oz of milk.
That is therefore 98 oz of milk a day.
Impossible.

LtEveDallas · 27/09/2010 15:58

Bloody hell, thats a HUUUUGE amount of milk. Thank you pommedeterre, I will copy that out and present it to him tomorrow!!

I would also be surprised if a 6 month old baby would eat as many jars as that too. If you're not supposed to wean until 6 months, then not all that many people would be giving a 6 month old 3 meals a day with pudding and 6 rusks a day.

My DD started weaning v early (14 weeks) but I'm not sure she was on 3 meals a day at 6 months.

Less demonstrable than the milk though, as a bit subjective.

6 rusks a day though - still can't get over that! DD never manages a whole one!

Nineathena · 01/10/2010 09:07

Goodness, that's a lot of milk and food! 6 rusks a day is a LOT.

My 9 month old goes through this a week:

1 x 900g tin of powder formula (2x 250ml bottels and 2 x 200ml bottles a day)
3 x small meals a day (Veg, fruit, yoghurt, cereal)
2 x snakcs a day (Tiny baby rice cakes or dried mango or game biltong)

And she's BIG for her age hey.

Thanks for your help with this ladies. I spoke to the person concerned and queried their claim - at first was quite bolshy, but later admitted that they had 'stocked up'...... Made me go through the rest of the claim with a fine tooth comb - and guess what, the whole thing was inflated!

Took back over £250 in total - half the claim! (and will be keeping an eye on future claims)

Such stupidity - if they hadn't been so greedy I probably wouldnt had audited the claim - now I'll be auditing EVERY claim!
