12 month old won't eat

My DS is 12 months old and has been a good eater since we started weaning at 6 months. He would eat both purees and finger foods, but recently - I'd say over the last 4 weeks or so - he won't eat anything from a spoon, not even yoghurt and he will only eat a very limited number of finger foods, which are:

Cucumber
Grapes
Raisins
Bread sticks
Toast - sometimes with cheese on
cheese spread sandwich if he is in a very good mood
Melba toast
Pasta shapes
peas, carrots, sweetcorn, green beans etc

I am getting worried that he will not be getting enough nutrients as this is so limited. I can sometimes get him to have the odd spoon of mushed up food such as chicken casserole or pasta sauces, but this is his only source of meat as he won't eat pieces of meat. DD was and is a really good eater so this is all a bit of a shock to the system!

I'm sure he would be happy to live on bread sticks and cucumber! If he doesn't like the look of something he just throws it on the floor. I have tried reducing his milk, but this had no effect.

On the plus side he does have plenty of energy, sleeps well and is on the 50th percentile for weight.

Does anyone have any ideas for more finger foods that would make up a good meal for a 12 month old? I'm worried that he will get bored of these combinations and stop eating all together!

Is he teething? Maybe he wants stuff to chomp on rather than mushy things?

Ladyem · 10/09/2010 20:07

Thanks for the reply! He may well be teething as he is biting everything. I'm just running out of ideas!!

In that case, frozen banana batons go down well and even celery (although i'm sure not much would be swallowed!)

If he likes 'crunch' then you could try cheese spread on crispbread or tuna mayo or mackerel pate (mine loved mackerel pate on oat cake biscuits)

Thanks for those suggestions! I've not tried the fishy stuff, so will give that a go today! Will also freeze some banana sticks as he does like banana, but can't seem to hold on to it long enough when it is just sliced as is is so slippery and won't eat it from a spoon any more.

Have you tried just giving him what you're having? Not mashed. Just as is?

At 12 months, he should be able to handle most things. And that will then give him lots of new tastes and textures to try.
