Anyone had problems with apple?

Gave DS (6 months) pureed apple last night. It was the second day in a row but I used a different variety of apple. Also I didn't puree it quite as smoothly as the night before so it was definitely more textured and mashed up rather than runny.

Crucially, I gave it to him at 6pm... probably too late.

He went to sleep about 8 and woke up screaming a couple of hours later - proper high-pitched screams the like of which we have never heard from him before. We calmed him down within about ten mins but it took quite a while to get him back off to sleep and he was quite cranky for some time. In the end we resorted to a drop of Calpol. Stroking his tummy also seemed to help.

Has anyone else experienced a reaction to apple when weaning?

Sorry to hear about your son's nighttime screams. I have found apple makes DS sick - even just a bit mixed in with other foods. Even gumming a whole apple had a similar effect. I think he may have a degree of reflux and acidic foods are not recommended for babies with this condition. Hopefully both babies will get over this before long!

I have no experience of this but my sister is allergic to apple and it makes her throat really itchy. Perhaps it may be worth avoiding and keeping an eye on?

Funny this should appear today, we are in the early stages of weaning, so far we've had success with carrot, sweet potato and baby rice, but today I tried apple; after 4 small spoonfuls he was sick, he is not a sicky baby so this was very unusual. My friend is also weaning and she told me today (before I mentioned apple) that her DS had a very sore tummy following apple!

Erm - could it be anything else - teething perhaps?

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 29/08/2010 21:58

It could well be teething, he has been having lots of uncharacteristic cranky patches of late and is pullling his ears, dribbling and shoving everything into his mouth - all classic signs, but no tooth yet. Poor thing.

On the apple front, I've given little bits of it to him since then, mixed in with other things and he seems fine but I have been treading carefully. Maybe it was just a particularly sharp one that didn't agree with him.

My new battle is to persuade him to eat avocado - he thinks it is beyond disgusting. But then, so do I... tut, tut, mustn't project I know! Am sneaking it into pear puree and that seems tolerable Grin

Thanks all!

Teething. The signs go on for ages before the teeth appear.

He'll soon be wolfing down the whole fruit bowl.

Yes, agree with NonnoMum. The screaming / apple is probably correlation rather than causation. Why do you need him to eat avocado? If he don't like it, leave it.
