US visa question (esta declined)

Hi
My nephews esta got rejected, we don’t know why. There was definitely no errors on the form. My sister has had to apply for a visa for him. He doesn’t need an interview at the embassy as he’s under 14.
My question is - has anyone else done this? The visa application along with his passport and birth certificate was sent off by courier to the US embassy in London 4 weeks ago now and we don’t even know if they’ve received it. My sister has had no email to acknowledge receipt of the documents- we don’t know if this is normal. We can’t get through to anyone at the courier, there is a tracking number but can’t get it to work.

She was told the application would take 21 work days but she’s worried now that it’s not even been looked at yet. There’s no one to ring and we’re just feeling very fed up and exasperated with this whole process. Any insights at all would be most welcome thanks.

That sounds like a very dodgy courier. Try much harder to contact them, I don't want to worry you but a tracking number not working makes it sound like a scam. Why didn't you send it special delivery?

Which courier?

Phone the embassy and speak to someone there.

There was no option to use special delivery - you have to use their courier. It was DX.

We have just managed to find the site to check on visa application status and it’s been refused. Again, no idea why. This is for a 5 year old. Both parents had their esta accepted straight away. Will try ringing the embassy today.

Did you find out what the issue was, OP? I used to work in immigration and the US is famous (infamous) for having some very common names flagged in its system so anyone called John Smith (for example) gets caught up in problems.

No we never found out why it was refused but he now has a visa. Very annoying system not being able to find out the reason.
