Help with Nintendo eshop please!

DS (6) got a switch for Xmas. So far he's just played the games we got him for it, mostly Minecraft. But he's been asking for other things he sees advertised for the switch, things on the shop. I'm a little wary about telling him about the online shop because he's ND and will want everything that's there, esp anything free, and I'm concerned about content.

My questions are:

  • if I go on the eshop and buy him a game can he get back on and spend my money/ do I need to actively turn on purchasing controls?
  • can I set it up so that he can't download any game without my approval?

I do have the parental control app set up but don't really know my way around it. Presume this would limit him downloading inappropriate games but I want to make sure he can't just download a ton of games and fill up the storage on the switch too.

Any tips appreciated!

I believe the eshop on the switch will ask for your Nintendo password for any purchase with a credit or debit card unless an eshop gift card is used then I don't believe it will ask for it. that's from my experience on my own switch but of course I haven't got parental controls on x

I only buy small cheap games on the e shop (and very rarely). For big games like Zelda, it can be better to buy the physical copy because you don't use all the memory space in the switch and you can sell them on later. Or buy second hand.

My son has a switch (as do I) on my one I can have my card/paypal details saved but on his as it's set up with him as a child then any time we want to buy anything on it we have to make the payment at the time it won't save any payment details

On our Switch, you have to put a password in to even access the shop, so just make sure he doesn't know that! I don't think I've got my card details stored in there though either.

Great, thanks all, that's reassured me! Will try and work out later how to get the game he wants

I also have the only access to the shop, if my DS10 wants to browse he needs me to log in (I bring up the QR code to scan with my phone).

I also prefer to purchase Nintendo gift cards and load them on the account, instead of using my bank card. With my DS it means once logged in he has a set amount to decide for himself, but also no bank details are available.

That's a great idea about the gift cards, will do that I think, thanks
