We've almost always gone for custom built. Most of the time when looking at pre built they've not really had the specs we wanted - as in some components not good enough whilst others were more than we needed. This tended to make the whole thing more than we wanted to pay but still not quite what we were after. Custom built meant we could compare specs/prices on a few trusted sites to get exactly what we wanted for the best price at the time.
