Xbox S or X, what’s the difference?!

Sorry no one in our family is a gamer so I don’t know who to ask! Son 13 currently uses the Xbox one we’ve had for over 10 years, was his sisters’s one but they didn’t use it much. He wants to play FIFA with his friends but says ours doesn’t work. He’s only really started gaming in the last 6 months.
My question is the X is obviously more expensive than the S so does it do ‘more’? I don’t want to get the S and then find in a year that we should have got the X so should we just go for it now and it will be the console he uses for say the next 5 years? Ie is it worth the extra money?
many thanks

I have an s. Not found any game I can't run on x only.

Now it's less hard drive so I occasionally have to delete something to create space.

I also can not sell my games when done. As all digital. Also I can't but second hand games. But I just buy when on sale to offset that.

Series X and Series S

They both play the same games.
But.

The S has an output of upto 1080
The X has an output of upto 4k
(Won't matter if you do t have a 4k TV)

The S has a slightly lower GPU speed which basically means that some game that run at 60fps on Series X won't run at 60fps on Series S. But, 30fps is fine for most games, unless high end competition FPS.

The original Series X has a disc drive, series S doesn't so digital games only on Series S.

Series X has a bigger memory to store games.

Basically.

If you've got a 4k TV - series X
If you want to buy physical games - Series X

If you've got a hd TV 1080p and you're only going to use Gamepass. Series S

Series S and Gamepass is amazing tbh

As for last ability.. well, they've been out a good while already, I wouldn't be surprised if redesigns and new consoles are announced before your 5 years are up.

Tbf. I got the Series S and Gamepass because I wondered if they'd announce a pro version etc after a couple years. But I've been delighted with it. £250 and it's awesome.

Series S is standard high definition gameplay and disc free (I.e all games must be purchased digitally rather than installed using a disc). this means any games he already has on Xbox One (if that’s the model he has) won’t be playable on series S

Series X has a disc drive, so can play games from disc, is backwards compatible with most Xbox One Games, and gameplay is 4k

We had a similar struggle a couple of years ago for dc1 and 2. The lower price point of the S won and we went with that. Dc aged 14 and 12 at the time.

Two years later both Series S's still going strong. Both dc very happy with them and have no desire to upgrade.

They both have very high end gaming monitors...no idea of the specs because that's dh's territory but they were bloody expensive and are apparently top class. The quality/visuals they get on their screens with the Series S are outstanding. Maybe the X would be better again but I can't really see how tbh.

Thank you, he only plays about 4 games at the moment so I reckon storage isn’t a problem so that’s good to know. Thank you.

Thank you. He does run this off a 4K tv but he really wants this for us to play FIFA so do you think it doesn’t really make much difference which one he gets? We have a game pass so he plays a couple things on that, Fortnite I think??! I’m leaning towards an S now as it seems there’s not much in it and a bit cheaper! Thanks so much.

Thank you, he wants the new FIFA which we’d have to buy anyway and I think the rest of the things he plays is with his gamepass so I think this means either will be fine. Thanks for your help, I know nothing!

Honestly he plays 3 games on repeat so I think storage isn’t really an issue for him (for now I guess!). I think the S will be fine and great to know it comes with Fortnite anyway. Thanks for that.

He plays on a good tv downstairs at the moment, a good monitor may come next year for his birthday for his bedroom but I’m resisting it being up there for as long as I can as I fear I may never see him!

Personally speaking, I don't see that much difference between 4k and 1080 on a big TV. Some people say they can, but I don't know it's like they always pause it and zoom in and say,
"Look how much better it looks"
But unpause it and play the game and 1080 looks fine to me.

I've played FIFA a little, it's fun and I don't think 4k over 1080 would add much if anything.

Fortnite might be a little better on series X, that's relies a bit nore in reaction and speed and decent frames per second. (I've never played it on my Series S, I've never played it full stop though)

It's also worth mentioning, and it does matter to some people, the Series S is so small and quiet and cute. I love it. Even when I'm not playing it, sometimes I see it by my telly and just smile because it's so cute. (Who was it that said you should only keep what you love?)
The series X on the other hand is a big old black box that is not cute at all. 🤣🤣

Mary Kondo I think!! And actually a small box rather than a big clunky thing (seeing as it sits downstairs) is a definite bonus!! I think I know which way I’m going now! Many thanks.
