Cheap gaming laptop?

I'm pretty clueless about tech, and DS13 is desperate for a gaming laptop. We have a Linux PC and that covers all our needs for work/school work etc, so the laptop only needs to be good for gaming. DS plays Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox when he's at his dad's and really wants to be able to do the same at mine. Please can anyone recommend a laptop which would run these without lagging a lot and won't mean I need to sell a child to fund it?? Thanks from a confused mum 😁

Look for one of these second hand

What do you mean cheap? What's your budget?

YourSpleenIsDamp · 20/11/2023 09:28

Up to about £400 I think. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll investigate 🙂

I'm looking for something similar myself - Currys are good because they tell you the frame rate for particular games (usually call of duty) and they do refurbished machines. For Minecraft I think you need to avoid chromebooks, it has to be microsoft operating system.

For your budget of £400, you may be better off looking for a used or a returned one, as you'll get a lot more spec for your money, which will be much better for DS's games.

You would want it to have at least 16GB RAM, and a "Dedicated" graphics card, instead of an "Integrated" graphics card.
Something like an RTX 3060 graphics card would be amazing as it would last DS a long time, and play pretty much any game that he wanted. But failing that, a laptop with one of these graphics cards in it (these are a little older so would be easier and cheaper to find in a laptop): 2060, 2060TI, 1080TI, 3050, 3050TI.

So potentially you could look at Amazon Warehouse (Amazon's Official Returns), eBay or CEX. You could keep an eye out and check daily on the laptops section on Amazon Warehouse incase a laptop return pops up that's in your price range, for the spec. Or perhaps you could get lucky making a Best Offer on some laptops on eBay, such as these ones that have an RTX 3060 graphics card in them:

Thank you so much - that's really helpful 😊

Please, please, please do not buy that ^^
There are so many bad reviews about it being unable to run Minecraft, even though it's advertised as a "Minecraft Edition". The specification is so bad, it's more of a glorified tablet with a keyboard than an actual laptop.
