Dc years 7 & 8 would like their first console for Xmas. They currently play Roblox on their tablets. What would be best for this age group? Not really sure how much they would even play it. Thanks.

I'd say a switch for that age

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 30/10/2023 17:44

Yup at that age I'd say switch.

BeansOnToast32 · 30/10/2023 17:48

I was going to say Switch but I don't think Roblox is available on it if they wanted to play it on a console.

Hearmenow23 · 30/10/2023 17:49

Is there anything else I need to know? Do I need to buy anything else?

I think Nintendo is better for kids than Playstation or Xbox but not sure that Roblox is available on Switch.

I have Xbox, switched from PS after PS3 gen finished because I wanted to try Forza and Forza Horizon.

TBH I have not found Xbox better than PS and in hindsight I would not have switched. But my general feeling is that there is not much difference between the two.

I don't know much about Roblox but I would think about where they might want to go in a few years time rather than just buy for now.

For example if they are into creativity and building rather than just playing games it might be worth moving onto a different direction than Nintendo, but all platforms have their benefits and drawbacks.

Check if any of their friends have Xbox or PlayStation as it’s much easier to play online together on the same platform (maybe when they are older). We got an Xbox for our son but he couldn’t join in with his friends so we ended up swapping for a PlayStation (both were second hand so cheaper)

Presuming you mean age 7&8 rather than school year 7&8, I'd say a Switch.

My DS is 10 and has had four years heavy use out of it!

Bear in mind the Switch 2 is rumoured to come out next year, so you are buying an end of life console at full price!

SeasonalBlue · 06/11/2023 22:26

Switch is a waste of money as they'll want to change to Xbox or PlayStation before long.

It's much of a muchness really. Like whether you like android or apple... they're both functional but depends on your preferences

Digimoor · 06/11/2023 22:47

I would say Switch - I don't know much about the XBox. PS is good but most games are 16+

CherryCokeFanatic · 06/11/2023 22:50

Switch if you think they would like Nintendo games (Pokémon, Mario and the like). If not - either Xbox or PlayStation is fine. For all consoles I’d recommend the obvious games based on kids tv shows/movies, Lego games (great co-op so they can play together), Minecraft etc.

Age 7 and 8 - Switch
Year 7 and 8 - PlayStation

Hearmenow23 · 07/11/2023 01:43

Thanks they're years 7 & 8. They don't really know about games like Mario. They just play on their tablets. They would like dance games and creative games. It would literally be a new thing. Dh hasn't really played a console for 20 years.

If they want to play with friends online then get what their friends have (seems to be PlayStation among the similarly aged children I know).

I think switch is still good for years 7 & 8, but presuming they're old enough to not believe in Santa can you just ask them?

Hearmenow23 · 07/11/2023 02:04

They don't know what they want! I have asked. They just all play Roblox.
