Switch downloads

Can anyone explain downloads for Switch please?! I'm looking at the Harry Potter lego game and it seems to be code download only. How does this work?
We're looking at getting a Switch for our 8 year old and want all the parental settings possible.

You go onto the switch online store select the game and then input the code that will be in the digital download box if its store bought, I would buy the actual game card if thats an option as we recently resold DS switch and he had 5/6 games that were no use as cant be re sold or re downloaded by another user where as the card games could be

Yes game card comes in the box.

Playing devil's advocate but I will only buy downloaded games now. We've lost several expensive games because the kids haven't looked after them properly/put then away correctly.

Plus we have issues with certain game cards not working reliably, or stop working at all.

We have neither of these issues with downloaded games.

We have sold many game cards but regret selling most of them as they now want to go back and play them.

Ds game card slot doesn't work anymore and I've not got it fixed so download games only here x
