DS wants to build his own gaming computer

DS14 wants to buy the parts and build himself a gaming computer. He has a budget of around £1300 and seems to think he can buy everything he needs from Amazon within that budget. He says a couple of his friends have done so.

My worry is that neither DH or I have a clue about gaming computers or how to build them and I would hate for him to waste his money.

Does anyone have any advice please on anything to avoid or any parts that are a must buy/do?

It's amazing that he wants to, to be honest there are hundreds of thousands of YouTube tutorials out there and if you get into the community there will be lots of people willing to help/offer shopping advice. All three of mine have done this and ended up with great PCs plus it's a great skill to learn.

I would maybe advise caution in two areas a) at this moment the chip production is only just getting back into it's stride and chips are going to be poorer quality for more money in the next few months at least and b) get someone to talk to who can tell you where to be super careful, I remember one component where you have to make sure to ground yourself before you open it so no ripping open deliveries/make sure you buy the right build substances there were some near misses with DS2s!

Also once you have done the initial recon into what you want/need as long as you have a good supply of the correct tiny screwdrivers and cable ties it's really quite straightforward. I've seen harder jigsaws.

@MrSlant thank you - I will talk to him about the chip issue and ask him to look at YouTube (I'm sure he will have but just in case.)
