Just bought a Series X and going to get a monitor for it. I've got a decent IPS Sony TV which is great for 4k films but not great for gaming as the input lag is ~40ms which isn't great for the online shooters I like. It's about six years old so came out before 4k gaming was really a thing.
I'm not interested in replacing the TV as it still looks great for films etc. Cost a good few grand and I've also got the optional £500 soundbar/sub for it.
I was gonna just buy a £300 monitor, probs a 1440p 120hz one as don't really need 4k on a 28" screen and also because I'll be using the 'performance' graphical setting in most shooters which sacrifices the 4k resolution for 1440p but bumps framerate from 60fps to 120fps for smoother gameplay. Plenty of decent options out there for the price.
However, my mate has just exchanged a £700 Alienware monitor due to a small colour defect which can only be seen when the screen is in a uniform shade of certain colours. They haven't collected the old one after much chasing so he's said I can have it for £200 on the proviso that he refunds me and I return it in the unlikely event they contact him in the next fortnight (any longer and he'll say he's disposed of it as he's told them he hasn't got the space to keep it indefinitely). However, IMO it's very unlikely they'll contact him now as it's been over a month.
I'm not sure whether to just get a decent budget one with no issues, which would've certainly been a big upgrade from my current playing in 1080p, or whether to get what the reviews are saying is pretty much the prettiest 1440p gaming monitor money can buy atm. The Alienware is also only 60fps and I was defo going to go 120fps, but at well over double the price new it's going to surely be a massive visual upgrade. Need to decide by tomorrow really as wanted monitor for this weekend as off next week.
