I can't. Even the instructions are torture.

No. But my son can in less than 30 seconds. Which is terribly slow compared to the world record!

DramaAlpaca · 08/07/2021 21:59

Nope. I got many one years ago when they first came out in the 70s and I could never do it. I don't remember it coming with instructions though.

Rollergirl1980 · 08/07/2021 22:00

I can with instructions. I've learnt the beginning stages so can do them on my own now. I use these:www.youcandothecube.com/solve-it/3x3-solution

megletthesecond · 08/07/2021 22:00

No.
I did manage two sides once and that was it.

My ds managed it with a you tube video.

Watto1 · 08/07/2021 22:02

Yes! Learnt when they first came out in the early 80s and can still do it now.

Fiddliestofsticks · 08/07/2021 22:02

I got my time down to less than 4 minutes when I was at uni. I cant even remember the first set of algorithms nowadays!

Same here. I did it a couple of times, very slowly and painstakingly following the online instructions.

My DS11 taught himself and does it in about 20-30secs. I haven't the patience to learn it that well!

headlock · 08/07/2021 22:03

@DramaAlpaca YouTube instructions. Thought it would be pretty straight forward when being spoon fed the info. It's not!
I was always able to do one side. That's about it.
Can do the first couple of steps in the videos but after that it all goes pear shaped.

Yes I used a you tube video then made my own notes and now I can do it super fast
It took me absolutely ages to finally get there even with the videos

cornflakegirl · 08/07/2021 22:05

ruwix.com is a great site

RubixCubix · 08/07/2021 22:06

Yes, it's my super power!

Not a terribly fast time though. Got it to around 1 min 30 sec back when my son was obsessed with timing me doing it!

Luckystar1 · 08/07/2021 22:07

Yes with a YouTube video. I nearly threw the fucking thing through a window during my attempts (even with the video it was a nightmare!), but I suspect if I had the time and inclination I could practice to do it relatively quickly.

SpacePotato · 08/07/2021 22:07

Nope. In the olden days we used to take them apart and put them back together finished Grin

Can't be arsed learning the pattern on you tube.

Anyone remember the flat Olympic ring ones?

headlock · 08/07/2021 22:08

I really want to do it to impress my kids.

...or peel the coloured stickers off and stick them back on so it looked like you'd done it Grin

As for YouTube, the internet wasn't invented when I got my Rubik's Cube. I think mine is up in the attic somewhere, I might have to dig it out and have another go.

safariboot · 10/07/2021 03:26

No.

I could probably look up and follow a method, but I don't want to. I want to figure it out myself. But ... I've never been able to.

BillyIdle · 10/07/2021 03:37

Yep..my record. Is 57 seconds. I have a nephew who can do one in less than 40 seconds. I use a pre determined sequence, he uses maths. Apparently it's just simple algorithms, whatever they are.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/07/2021 03:38

Only if i pull it apart lol.

sashh · 10/07/2021 04:46

Yes.

When I was 16 I went to stay with relatives in Australia, my much younger cousins were more excited by my cube skills than anything else.

When I started to do it I could tell the stickers had been moved.

Both girls denied it so I asked who had got most sides - it was their dad, before he left 12 months earlier so the girls had no chance.

I'd forgot about that but now you reminded me, what a bastard.

Rollergirl, my DS learnt how to do it using this site, based on this thread - and got quite quick...but has since forgotten the last stage, and the site has gone! Can you tell me, is this method unique? If so is there any way of you explaining / reminding us what he needs to do??? Thank you!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 28/10/2021 20:58

Yes! I taught myself a couple of years ago. It had always irked me that my brother could do it when we were kids and I couldn't. To get one up on him, I also taught myself to do a 5x5 cube Grin (although I've probably forgotten that now as it's significantly more difficult.)

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/10/2021 21:02

I used to be able to do it, not mega fast though. I got one a couple of years back and can reliably do one face and the middle layer, but can't complete the last row without youtube assistance.

FindingMeno · 28/10/2021 21:03

Used to be able to back in the mists of time

WhenSheWasBad · 28/10/2021 21:07

I can (it’s been a while though so I need to practice). Best time was 2 mins 30.

No idea how people get down to 30 seconds.

TammyTwoSwanson · 28/10/2021 21:13

Yes. Takes about 5 ish minutes - I don't try and do it speedy or anything.
