Nintendo Switch question for a newbie

I have purchased a Preorder Nintendo Switch Fortnite console, and added a Mario kart game, for my son's christmas gift. Son 2 obviously needs the same. If I just buy him the console, will both of them be able to make use of the Mario Kart game, or will I have to buy the game twice for them?
I have tried to google it but it makes no sense to me. (Both sons will probably know but I don't want to spoil their surprise. Both have cried buckets over not being able to play Fortnite on their phones anymore....) THank you for any assistance, oh wise gamers!

As I understand it you can get the game either as a cartridge in which case you can put it in different devices or as a download in which case it’s tied to the device you download it to.

We played mario kart in the early days of lockdown but just connected one switch to the tv and 3 or 4 of us played. Perhaps they could share it like this?

Thank you mysteryfairy, we play mario kart on the Wii, so I would rather not buy more games than I need. I think the game I purchased is a cartridge, so they could share. I just want to avoid any Christmas Drama! I have a daughter as well, is there a game she would enjoy if I splurge out on one for her too? Any recommendations? (I just want to get the Christmas shopping done and paid for. And relax.)

On the switch you can create profiles for each child so you can insert the cartridge and it basically saves the data for that game. So yes u can use it between more than 1 console. You can also play any game u have previously inserted without needing the cartridge. This is good if you are going out. You will have to have WiFi access for this.

My daughter loves animal crossing kingdom.

Another recommend for Animal Crossing (it's called New Horizons, not Kingdom, btw) for your daughter, or Mario Odyssey, or Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Best to get them all on cards, so all the kids can play them.

One potential problem: If you're getting Switch Lites for them all, only one person can play Mario Kart - no two/three player racing around the TV. If you get one of them a Switch (not Lite) then it can connect to the TV. Perhaps for your daughter, so the boys can hide away and do their Fortnite in their rooms... while she can play good games either in her room or on the TV.

Why do you need 3 switch consoles? Just get one and buy extra joycons
