So ds plays fortnite, roblox, fnaf, various star wars. Not into racing or football games. Reads Darren Shan and Charlie Higson.

Wtf game can he have to bridge the gap between 12s, which don't appeal to.him, and the ones he thinks look good (which are of course, 18s)? Swearing doesn't concern me much, but content does. I am not a gamer and on safer ground with books. I'm happy for him to start Stephen king etc at 12 (because I did), but don't have a clue about games. His mate's parents are a clueless as me.

Any ideas?

Get him gta5 or call of duty. They are very family friendly

I think edith is being childishly sarcastic.
We are having a similar Xbox problem. Got various Lego games, Minecraft etc but it does seem to then jump in age ratings.
However we also have a Nintendo Switch. Their games are more aimed at that age. We have Bendy and the Ink Machine (which is a 12) which is fun.
Would he consider trading in the Xbox for a Switch. The game choice is better (unfortunately a bit more expensive).

I suggest reading reviews on Commonsensemedia, so you can separate out what bothers you. With our son we sometimes let him have a game, but don’t let him play the story mode (eg GTA), or vice versa, he can play some things but only in closed groups with friends, not online. You do need to know what you’re getting though, so ideally play things through a bit yourself first...

I know what you mean about bridging the gap as we’ve had a lot of trouble sorting that out here ourselves. Fundamentally, we’ve got to the point of allowing more violent things provided the tone is not too unpleasant, but everyone has to make their own call.

Call of duty? My 12 yo mainly plays FIFA, fortnite, mine craft, and call of duty. He has an xboss game pass though that allows them loads of games to play for free. I think the game pass is £7.99 a month

Trying to think of specific suggestions now - Plants vs Zombies? Overwatch?

Thesadmilkman · 11/09/2020 20:00

Thanks, people.

He's got overwatch and Bendy. And plays plants vs zombie s sometimes.Think he's got xbox live too. Trouble is, it's for a bday present and he doesn't really know what he wants. This age is hard. It's the women thing in gta,but I.do know kids that play it. I'm not that bothered about violence, although a friend of mine reckons Fallout is a massive no.

He loves fort nite cos he can play with mates. Football just doesn't do it for him. I think he thinks there's a kind of platonic ideal of a game out there that he just hasn't found!

Sunset Overdrive is really fun, kind of comic style gore killing monsters - and there is a setting to turn off the gore and swearing for younger players. Kingdom Hearts III might be worth a look, although I found I had no clue what was going on in the story. It's quite old now but there is a Ghostbusters game.

Recently there have been a few older games remade for the new consoles - I'm currently playing SpongeBob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom which is fun. They've also done Crash Bandicoot games, Spyro, Rayman. Destroy All Humans looks silly but I've not played it, that one might be a bit violent.

Would he be interested in simulation games? Cities Skylines is good, and you can build your own dinosaur park in Jurassic World Evolution. The Sims is available on Xbox too. Maybe games like Overcooked, I think that can be multiplayer.

I second what someone else said about looking at Common Sense Media, really good online resource.

Forza driving games?

BadlydoneHelen · 09/10/2020 21:11

Rocket League?

Can I bump for more ideas, particularly two player?

DS just a little younger. He has the Xbox mainly because I caved in during lockdown and needed some way to chat to pals. He mainly plays Minecraft and Fortnite. But I'd like to broaden his gaming experience hes not particularly into football.
