Best platform to play Doom?

I last played Doom years ago on Windows 95 and a quick google search tells me that playing on a modern pc is problematic. I've never owned a games console so is there one which is best for playing Doom (& similar games)? I'm not fussed about multi-player stuff, resolution, range of games etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Original Doom is proverbially on everything ever including toasters.

A Switch is probably the best and simplest way if you want to do it on a console. They also have Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3 and Doom (2016)! Plus loads of other retro and indie things.

Otherwise any PC/Mac can play it, though it'll take a little assembly since as you say the real original is a bit crap to get going. You can buy the original via the Bethesda store app, and then play it on your computer using ZDoom - zdoom.org/downloads - with the game files you purchased.

If you'd like some modern-retro games along those lines, there's Devil Daggers (Windows only I think) and Amid Evil (more along the Heretic/Hexen family). There was a remake of Rise of the Triads fairly recently, that's very silly.

Thanks for this Sardine, my godson (13) has a Switch and has graciously agreed to let me have a go next time I visit .

Doom is £4 on the Nintendo eShop I think, I can't tell how much because I bought it already!

Well there's a turn up - the original Doom/Doom2 on PC/Mac and everything else has just been updated for the first time in two decades, adding widescreen and various other things! So you can just buy and play the original now without any fuss.
