Games a bit like Fantastic Dizzy!

Can anyone remember this wonderful game on the Sega mega drive? I'm wondering if anyone can recommend something similar for dd (10) and ds (8). We'd like to try games where you can explore, talk to characters, find useful objects, maybe solve clues (but not too hard!). Nothing too fast paced or with too many baddies to kill. We haven't bought a console yet but DH has found his old X-box 360! Please could anyone help?

Do you just want Xbox games? Or would pc/laptop ones work as well? You can get emulators for the pc so you can play old games, or find remastered titles on Steam or GOG. I'm currently playing Simon the Sorcerer - remastered Amiga 500 version!

Fusion Retro Books are doing a Dizzy special in a month or two!

On the Xbox 360... well, it's a bit of a shoot-man-games console but there are some adventure games on it. All these are also available on PC or Mac, if you have one around:

The Secret of Monkey Island, and Monkey Island 2
Broken Age
Stacking
Sam and Max - series one and two
Minecraft Story Mode

There's many many more in the genre available but largely tuned for an older age group, 14+. The above would I think all be fine for yours.

Hey, @BobbinThreadbare123, tell me about Loom!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 05/06/2020 17:40

@TheHighestSardine You mean the latest masterpiece of fantasy storytelling from Lucasfilm'sâ„¢ Brian Moriartyâ„¢?

OP, you could try Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders, Day of the Tentacle, all the Monkey Islands, Normality, Broken Sword series, Psychonauts...

TheHighestSardine · 05/06/2020 17:50

Grin Sorry OP, it's an in-joke from the first Monkey Island game.

I had to look up Normality, I missed it at the time. Reminds me that Gobliiins existed though, and neither seem to have been ported to anything current.

The whole Lucasarts adventure games back catalogue is infinitely worth playing through - that's where Monkey Island, Loom, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, The Dig, Indiana Jones games and more come from. All of those are available for PC/Mac via gog.com and others.

I have found my spiritual home!

'You fight like a dairy farmer'

BobbinThreadbare123 · 05/06/2020 18:30

How appropriate; you fight like a cow

TheHighestSardine · 05/06/2020 19:20

Oh oh oh! You can play actual Fantastic Dizzy in a web browser now!

It's the old DOS version, so you'll need to play it on something with a real keyboard that has F1 etc keys - your phone/tablet probably won't manage to get past the first screen. Still. Amazing!

@TheHighestSardine I am stupidly excited that you have found the actual Dizzy for me! Thank you thank you! And thanks so much to everyone else for the wonderful recommendations, it's so appreciated and I can't wait to check them out. Thank you!

Excellent choice! You're in for a treat there :)

ChemistryTutorSolihull · 27/07/2020 22:45

Monkey island is HILARIOUS! We absolutely love it, thank you. I'll have to try and find similar games on the XBox360 as we've nearly completed it! Thank you for any recommendations! Where do you normally buy the old games?
