Crossplay PS4 to Xbox?

DS has never really got into gaming however all his mates have Xbox's, he needs some way on communicating with them.
DH has a PS4 that has only really been used as a standalone machine, ie not online.

Options are using the PS4 via crossplay or invest in xbox for DS.
What does Xbox live get you?

Certain games (Fortnite for example) allow cross platform play/chat. My daughter uses my PS4 to play with a friend who uses a Nintendo Switch.

The general rule though is that most games don't support cross platform play.

I know fortnite and minecraft support crossplay but is it easy to set up? Bearing in mind we are all new to online gaming

And now Ive just looked at Argos and there is 2 versions would they both work?

If you need to set up crossplay for a specific game (assuming the other party involved knows what they're doing) - the best thing you can do is look for a video on youtube.

You have to remember the companies that have spent a serious amount of money to code in crossplay to these games to increase profits and have made it as simple as possible to set up.
