Game chat not working on Fortnite Xbox One - pls help!

Suddenly my DS can't hear or speak through his wired headset - it's not the headset as it works on his brother's PS4. Have checked all the usual settings in game and in Xbox settings, and now I'm out of ideas 😬
Obv, it is a catastrophe of the highest magnitude.... anyone help?
