Games for a 9-year old

DS would like some new games for his 9th birthday, ideally PS4 but could be Nintendo Switch or PC. He likes Fortnite (obviously), Minecraft and Battlefront. My preference would be for something that is actually for his own age and not too fighty, but I know he won't appreciate a game that seems babyish to him and it is supposed to be a present! Not too worried about the age labels if the content seems okay.
He's quite geeky. Other things he enjoys are card games, comics, maths, Pokémon, Adventure Time, chess...

Any suggestions? Thanks!

My son's the same age and enjoys the same games as you said. He also likes rocket league, micro machines and the forza motorsport games aswell.

Ratchet and clank is mild enough to be appropriate but still challenging, especially since he already plays a bit.

My 9 year old likes rocket league (football type game played whilst driving cars - lots of his friends have it), Pokemon, Fifa and minecraft.

Rocket league is very popular here, and DS is 14 and many of his friends play it.

Bizarrely Farming Simulator is also popular

Crash bandicoot and Spyro , both older games that have been reworked for the newer consoles .

Mentioning the Nintendo Switch, because you haven't listed any games in particular- Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odessy are fantastic games if he doesn't have them already (which are really the most prominent reasons to buy a Switch so he probably will - worth checking though.)

You could also just ask him- boys tend not to mind too much about gifts being a surprise (though you might, so you could also just skip this message) - but if there is something particular he wants, he will probably tell you.

Get 'im the Nintendo Switch, but make sure to get the online payment as well, as otherwise he can't play online games like Fortnite. Make sure to play with him, and learn the ins and outs
