Which retro gaming consoles would you recommend? I like the old school 2D games - mario world, donkey kong, sonic

What would I need to buy to be able to play these old school video games? I heard the Super Nintendo Mini was launched and wasn’t there a Sinclair Spectrum relaunch too? Any good? Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

We have the Snes and it's awesome.
Got it purely to reminisce about the games we used to play.
Love playing Streetfighter 2.
Got it for £75 on Amazon.

Did u get an original snes? If so does it work on a modern TV? Or did it all connect and work easily? I’d love a snes!

We've got a Sega Mega Drive (bought from Argos & came with multiple games including 3 Sonic games) and a vintage PS1 which I picked up cheaply from eBay. Both work on our modern TV and vintage games are v. cheap (unless rare ones) online. The Sega, though new, works with original cartridges.

My husband (a spoilt child!) Has basically every 80s and 90s video game plus games and various controllers. They all work perfectly with modern Tv's. He's enjoying introducing the old games to DS.

We got the new retro mini that has all the built in games.
Plugged straight into our tv with no probs.

Look for anyone selling missed Xboxes with CoinOps installed. I have one and it has hundreds of games from loads of different systems on it.

The SNES mini can also be connected to a Computer and you can update it with up to 200 games.. I'm told it's very easy to do.

I have the SNES mini and NES mini. I much prefer the SNES with Mariocart, The Mario World with Yoshi and switch palaces (can't remember the name sorry), Zelda with the princess in the dungeon at the start, and the Donkey Kong with the little monkey buddy are all on there. DC1 prefers NES with Dr Mario and Bubble Bobble whilst DC2 likes the same games as me.

If you buy the Nintendo options just be aware that they only come with USB lead and no plug so you'll need to snaffle a USB plug from somewhere else. The leads are shorter on NES too so you're playing very close to the TV. I love my retro consoles. Now I'm trying to justify the Sega one too...

DunkandEgg · 23/03/2018 14:32

Anyone remember that game "the secret of monkey Island"?
I.loved bubble bobble, Dennis the menace with Mr Wilson chasing him away, echo the dolphin.

I download an emulator for my phone for gameboy and gameboy advanced coloured

WiseOldElfIsNick · 29/05/2018 13:53

The SNES Mini would be perfect for what you're after, although you can only play the 21 games which it comes pre-loaded with (yes you can hack it, but you do risk breaking it that way).

Nintendo's offerings, SNES and NES mini offer the most authentic reproductions of retro games. The other options (Sega, etc.) whilst officially licenced are not produced by the original companies and suffer as a result.

Emulators for PC or mobile are also an option, as is a Raspberry Pi running the RetroPi emulator, but bear in mind that unless you own the original games cartridges, it's illegal to download and use the ROMs to play these games.

We have a vintage games room. Original NES and SNES as well as others. There’s no issues connecting them to modern TV’s although my husband has old TV’s too because apparently they don’t look the same on flat screens

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 13/07/2018 16:11

Whoa whoa!

Back that brahmin up.

AmazingBouncing Ferret has a vintage games ROOM!?!

Do you think they will adopt me?
