Newbie PS4 owner - is it normal? (Downloading update file)

Ds is very proud owner of a PS4, but tearing his hair out over the amount of time it says it will take to download an update file for his Star Wars Battlefront II game - about 7gb and five hours, though this has varied from 99+ hours! Is there anything he can do to speed it up/or we cocking this up somehow? Should he avoid playing it so it can update? Do we need to bring it downstairs so can plug into modem?

Sounds like DS's. Says hours, then minutes, then back to hours... I guess it might depend how busy the network is? DS has found that if he just leaves it and does something else it's quicker than if he plays other games while waiting for the download.

Updates are the bane of our life atm (Xbox one) the hard drive is nearly full already ds1 is constantly checking that the favoured game only is downloading, rather than a random other.

I'm pretty impressed with the seamless way xbox deals with tablets/pcs/sky box etc. Feels like living in the future a bit

I'm afraid Battlefront is one of the biggies, but from memory the very large file is for playing online, rather than playing solo on the PS4. You may be able to postpone the large file until tonight/tomorrow night and do it when the network is quieter.

It will be faster if it's plugged straight into the router, but you may also be fighting for contention at the other end, i.e. because everyone is downloading from the Playstation servers at the same time. Check your broadband provider's usage policy, you'll want to avoid having your connection throttled due to overuse.

I'll check with ds but I would go and have a look at the download yourself if you haven't - it may be the game will play without it for now.

He can play the game alone but it’s just not the same, apparently.

Tip put the console into rest mode (standby) makes it go faster.
Also if a update is just out think how many people will be trying to get it.
Also internet speed also comes into play to
