It will work but on default texture pack. It's processor is not the fastest but it has a decent amount of ram. PC world were selling a much better one for 499 with dedicated graphics and an a 10 amd processor. Will see if I can find the link.

This. It has a faster processor , better graphics , twice as much ram and hard disk space.

Is just getting a normal PC an option?

Nieces and nephews seemed to cracked screens and other damage and they have little option to upgrade when compared to a normal PC.
