Have I broken my wii?

I've bought a 2nd hand wii fit plus and I'm trying to set it up. I've got as far as putting batteries in the board and I'm trying to sync it with the wii console but it then seems to interfere with the wii remote so I'm getting a message which says communications with wii remote have been interrupted. I can't then get my wii remote to work.

Can someone help before I explode with frustration ?

Have you tried putting some new batteries in your wii remote? It says on mine communications have been interrupted when the batteries are going flat.
