Vegan newbie (thanks in part to super supportive veganuary thread)

What are people's thoughts on protein powders as a way to up protein intake? I'm thinking of making into a smoothie for lunch after the gym. Are they a good idea or too processed to be healthy?

Hello again!

Have you done non vegan protein shakes?
I used to and they were OK. I've recently tried some of the Protein Works vegan wondershake and I can't get past the protein-shakiness of it. I'm not in my "down it in one" era any more.

I'm sticking with this stuff. The protein and cals per 100ml aren't too dissimilar but it's much more palatable!

I use Puition vegan. 25g protein per shake and I really enjoy it. I’ve tried various flavours and my favourite is vanilla.

👋 @PigInADuvet

I bought one at the gym but it was £5.50!!! Kept me really full all afternoon and I thought it tasted nice so might try making my own. It did have that slight powdery texture though.

That alpro looks to be a great shout. And I could mix it with a banana. I'll give it a go 🙏

How are you getting on back at the gym?

The gym is going really well thanks! Thats if you consider "going well" to mean having discovered that they do an amazing vegan brownie in the cafe. Highlight of swimming lesson day now 🤣

I do need to get my arse in gear and actually do something though...

@MiddleAgedButterfly on their website it says 16g per sachet? Puritan vegan?

I agree the purition ones are lovely and so are the huel ones. I find them tasty and filling, the huel black one has 40g protein.

M&S do a little pack of two - they're pretty good!

@Gymbunny2025 I have a new discovery to share with you...

Misfits bars. Currently on offer in Sainsbury's, seem to be under 200 calories and 14-15g protein each depending on flavour. And they actually taste good, like eating a chocolate bar kind of good!

Gymbunny2025 · 01/04/2025 19:06

I’m literally doing my online shop, and just searched for these. The first thing that came up was misfit dog treats 😂

they also have the protein bars so I’ll give them a go thanks!

I try and include at least three scoops of protein per day. Current favourite is Vivolife as they use Stevia instead of sucralose ( makes me bloated)

Had a couple now- they’re really yum. Thanks for the recommendation!

@Gymbunny2025 I can also recommend the MyProtein clear vegan protein - very palatable, 10g per 350ml

Init4thecatz · 08/04/2025 21:35

In terms of powders, you can go for soy protein, pea protein, or even grind up your own... but in all honesty, I'd stick with the drinks as the pea flavour gets old before you've even finished the first gulp. You literally have to chug and wash your mouth out.

I like Sun Warrior. They sell it in my local health food shop so I assume it must be one of the more natural ones
