What's happened to all the vegan bakery items?

I used to be able to buy vegan croissants, pain au chocolat and brioche buns in the supermarket.

So frustrating that they seem to have stopped selling them.

Where can I buy them now?

I've bought jus rol for now but it's a pain as I wanted them to take to a hotel so will have to bake in advance and hope they're edible the next day.

Sometimes the basic or economy versions are vegan if they use margarine rather than butter. I found vegan croissants in Tesco, in a bag of 6 individually wrapped. Can’t remember the brand, but tbh they weren’t that great.

I think there was a moment when many brands jumped on the vegan trend but then realised the demand wasn't really there. Also as the economy has been rocky many businesses are focusing on core lines for economies of scale.

You might buy them but how many other people? I presume if popular they would make more

And yes, it was really shocking how it eclipsed gluten-free goods - especially in restaurants - for too long. Perhaps recent high-profile allergy deaths have brought suppliers to a better sense of priorities.

Perhaps. I'm buying vegan for allergy reasons and there was a while when gluten free was all the restaurants would focus on. They would keep talking about gluten when I was trying to find egg and milk free options.

Locally, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda do the St Pierre Croissants and St Pierre Pain Au Chocolat, both of which are vegan, my local Sainsburys doesn't stock them. Tesco sometimes stock the La Boulangere croissants but I haven't been able to find the pain au chocolat versions of those for about a year now. I buy them for my kids who are dairy and egg allergic. Sainsburys do the Lazy Days caterpillar cakes which are vegan and gluten free. I haven't seen any brioche buns that are vegan in over a year- Tesco used to do a vegan brioche burger bun but they seem to have stopped now. It's worth checking different branches of the supermarkets though- there's a bigger Sainsburys about 35 minutes away from me that does a lot more vegan and free from food than my nearest one which is 10 minutes away, so I tend to go there every now and then to stock up on longer life foods.

That is a pain. Shame we all get lumped together.

I think most bakery items are vegan anyway

I think it was a trend and manufacturers jumped on it. Just look for stuff that's made with margarine (sorry 'vegan butter') which is most bakery produce, sadly.

I just knew mumsnet would come up trumps! Vegan croissants and vegan pain au chocolat have been procured for our weekend away.

Will make a separate trip to Aldi to stock up on brioche rolls.
