Hearty, filling vegan meals without spice.

My DP follows a most plant based diet but has recently decided to remove spice from all meals due to having an upset stomach (spice does seem to be the culprit)
We have a decent repertoire of vegan meals but 95% of them are spicy - think chipotle cauliflower tacos, harissa aubergine, etc.
Needing inspiration for some tasty vegan meals without spice but are also pretty filling (DP eats around 3000 calories a day due to exercise!!) Thanks😁

Lentil bolognese and vegan Mac and cheese (with cauliflower or broccoli through the sauce) are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head but I know there are several in the bosh cookbooks if you can get hold of one, or maybe look at their instagram/website - eg this shepherds pie https://www.bosh.tv/recipes/serious-shepherds-pie

Serious Shepherd's Pie | BOSH!

Shepherd's pie is a classic, and our vegan shepherds pie is totally delicious, filling and pretty healthy! Yes that's right- It's completely vegan and plant-based and is one our most popular new veggie recipes. Make it tonight, the family will love it....

Ratatouille with bread, or Soupe au pistou. Both filling, spice free and tasty.

DP and I were trying to invent this today, to suit both of us.

We've come up with mushroom Diane (or you could have mushroom in white sauce if you don't fancy the brandy) with rice. White rice is easier for some people with gut issues to digest, although obviously brown rice is a bit healthier.

To the sauce, you can add all sorts of things like peas and sweetcorn; but with gut issues you might want to avoid onion, garlic, and - as pp said - nightshades like tomatoes.

(Obviously using plant-based ingredients for the sauce ^^ )

Tetris90 · 23/06/2023 20:26

We did consider nightshade intolerance but it only seems to be connected to consuming spicy things and nothing else!

I think I’d try and aim towards rich rather than spicy so you still get a good level of flavour. Tomato sauces which have been simmered for a long time, you can make falafel without any spices but lots of herby, lemony type flavours, tabbouleh or couscous with herby roasted veg, polenta sticks, tofu stir fry going down the sticky and sweet sauce route, pasta with vegan pesto for a quick dinner

Served with sourdough for dipping

My favourite ever dish! So filling!

Do you mean hot spicy or all spice? Is cumin or coriander or cinnamon OK?

Coriander and cinnamon ok but cumin, chilli powder/flakes/seeds, curry powder, cayenne pepper, sriracha

Didn't realise how much I relied upon these ingredients until trying to cook without them🤣

How is he with garlic and onion? DH, DD, DSIL & DN all seem to get a bit bloated and unwell with both of these although they can tolerate garlic a bit better if you cut the root bit out.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 18:52

Do you mean no spice as in nothing hot or no spice at all? This is a favourite in this non vegan or vegetarian household. It has cumin and cinnamon in it-but it is very adaptable... www.nigella.com/recipes/moroccan-vegetable-pot

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 27/06/2023 20:10

How about Mushroom Bolognese?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 27/06/2023 20:12

Abc I've always loved Red Dragon Pie.

You’re a Saint op. I hope DP is researching and cooking as well. The lions share of cooking falls on me in my household but high calorie, vegan and spice free is asking too much.

Vegan sausage and mushroom pie - This recipe by Jamie Oliver in his 30 minute meals book, (chicken pie with French style peas and carrots) easily adapted to be vegan, think vegan sausages cooked beforehand and then added into the pie, with soya single instead of crème fraiche, with the carrots and the peas and lettuce its an absolutely stunning meal, so filling, one of my favourites

We used Mindful Chef boxes for a short time - but I still make use of their recipe bank most nights - you can search all vegan recipes under 'food group' and play about with the cuisine type and season to hopefully find loads of options that would suit

Lentil burgers with chopped watercress added. That's if DP can cope with the pepperiness of watercress.
