Recommend me the best cheeses please

There is just one thing that stops me being vegan. And that's cheese. Everything else in my diet is pretty much plant based and spot on

But what ARE the best substitutes for halloumi, cheddar, goats cheese and feta? I've tried both cheddar and feta substitutes in the past and they were revolting

I don't 'have' to give them up as I believe in progress over perfection but I would make the change if only I could find something decent

Any ideas please?

Applewood Smoked Vegan Cheese is a game changer. It melts easily and is so versatile.
If you need to replace cheddar in recipes, then use Violife Epic Mature or Ilchester vegan melting mature.
For mozzarella, there aren’t so many options. I use Green Vie. It has a super creamy, cheesy flavour when eaten raw and when I used it on a pizza it didn’t run thin or turn to liquid like the others I’ve tried.
I was dubious about finding anything that mimics my beloved feta well. I tried the one from Violife which was tasty and salty just to the right degree, but it didn’t crumble like true feta.

You have to go without cheese for a while. I don't think it's something that can swapped instantly like a lot of things. After a few years I've grown to love some vegan cheese and I didn't think I'd ever say that.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2022 07:57

Violife smoked is lovely. I find they all taste good melted but there's one that doesn't taste like plastic without melting and that's ... forgotten the name, brb...

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2022 07:58

KOKO!!

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 23/06/2022 08:02

Violife Greek white is a great feta substitute. It isn't crumbly but tastes exactly the same.

kateandme · 23/06/2022 08:18

Dont bother.ylue doing what you can.but vegan cheese just don't.misery lies there just eat the cheese

Same1977 · 23/06/2022 08:51

I have been plant based for 5 years now and honestly prefer plant based cheese to real deal, but only if not melted ( real chese ,for example on pizza is much nicer ).Ate real cheddar couple of weeks ago so know what I'm 'missing out on' ;)
It's just trying out brands and seeing what you like.

Very true.Altgough when my mum was over (she doesn't speak English) she found some cheese in the fridge and commented on how nice it was .It was Marks and Spencers own plant based one.She continued eating it instead of the dairy one we had gotten her.

PestorPeston · 23/06/2022 09:02

Vegan cheese is weird. It is generally almost protein free and quite high carb.

As someone who has a dairy allergy, I had such high hopes. I use nutritional yeast for cheesy taste, Nush has some protein and is nice in sarnies. The bulk standard supermarket stuff I use very sparingly.

Honeyroar · 23/06/2022 09:18

I asked on a vegan forum when I was opening my café. Nearly everyone said Applewood smoked, so that’s what I use in my café. It always has good feedback, although I don’t particularly like like it, but I eat regular cheese. The vegan Mexicana cheese goes down well too.

Same1977 · 23/06/2022 09:27

The best vegan cheese I found is actually nut based .Its quite expensive as artisan. You can order it online. Its a treat not an everyday thing...but then again even normal cheese shouldn't be consumed in volumes

WanderingFruitWonderer · 23/06/2022 09:29

I third an Applewood Smoked recommendation. I'm not a massive lover of most vegan cheese, and often just sprinkle seeds, or nutritional yeast etc on pizza or pasta instead. But I do like Applewood Smoked 👍

Stormchaser1502 · 23/06/2022 17:29

I’ve been vegetarian for a few years now and have gradually reduced dairy also. However, like you, I couldn’t kick the cheese!

3 weeks ago I decided to go the whole hog. The first few days were hard but after that I’ve not missed it at all. I feel so so much better!

last week we went to pizza express with family, and I ordered a vegan pizza without the vegan cheese 😂

ChilliPB · 22/07/2022 22:14

the best brands are :

I am Nut Ok
Palace Culture
Mouses Favourite

Prob need to get online or from a vegan deli but worth it - all less plastic tasting than most of the stuff you get in the supermarket!

Lightning88 · 30/07/2022 10:38

Applewood smoked gets my vote! Delicious both melted and straight from the fridge. First one I tried was Aldi’s own plant based cheese and I nearly threw up 😂

best of luck! Cheese and lattes were the ones I really struggled with sacrificing, but you eventually get there _

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 09/08/2022 00:56

Marks and Spencers Plant Kitchen feta cheese cubes are absolutely amazing
Agree with you, vegan cheese is usually rank 😭😂
This is lovely though.

AwkwardSquad · 09/08/2022 05:27

Not tried it myself, but have heard good things from local vegan deli about this www.tynechease.com

Motherofalegend · 06/09/2022 21:21

Came across Sheese recently. I don’t like, like vegan cheese, tried loads. However, I can palate this melted on a toasty or a pizza.

Worriedatwork1 · 16/10/2022 22:45

I am nut ok - love their morazella, miner threat, the paprika one and a couple of the others.
Honestly Tasty for blue cheese or shamembert

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 16/10/2022 22:48

Recently tried the Cathedral City vegan cheese as well which is really nice!
