I Absolutely love being alcohol free and vegan, I feel so healthy and well and I have actually been told I look GLOWING!!! Amazing! I was wondering if anyone wanted a chatty thread about the benefits and challenges of being an alcohol free vegan!
One of the tricky points is going out with friends and trying to show them that my lifestyle isn’t boring but brilliant!

trying to show them that my lifestyle isn’t boring but brilliant!

….and that’s what gives vegans, teetotallers, gym bunnies etc a bad name.

You do you and leave people to make their own choices. Why do you feel the need to ‘show them’? Pretty soon they will actually not want to go out with you at all. There should be nothing tricky about meeting up with friends for a social evening.

I say this as a GF, Teetotal, vegetarian who does yoga and HIIT workouts btw.

Thanks for that. Pleased to know people won’t want to go out with me.

I'm vegetarian and teetotal. Have never touched meat, fish or alcohol since the day I was born. I am healthy, physically and mentally, and feel great with the lifestyle I grew up with and then chose myself.

But I never talk about it with other people - not unless they specifically ask and are actually curious about it. I definitely don't try to 'show them my lifestyle'. I've often been to restaurants without declaring out loud what my diet is - I just order the veggie option off the menu and get a soft drink. Nobody's ever questioned it.

People who harp on about veganism/vegetarianism/being teetotal are the most boring of bores. Don’t base your personality on being these things.

I also say this as a teetotal vegetarian of over 30 years, who is vegan half of the time.

Ok, just thought that because this was a “vegan board” then people might just want to chat about being vegan. Thought I’d stab in the dark that maybe there might be a few sober vegans too that would like to chat. Obviously this is a HUGE no no. I would never preach to anybody about my lifestyle but I without doubt get comments when I ask for a vegan menu and order a soft drink. Always. Nice to know that people who share a similar lifestyle stick up for each other!

‘I feel so healthy and well and I have actually been told I look GLOWING!!!’

‘going out with friends and trying to show them that my lifestyle isn’t boring but brilliant!’

To me, the first quote is a bit much. The second quote bears no relation to how me and my non vegan/veggie and non teetotal friends interact with each other.

It just comes across as too preachy. Just be you, let them be them.

However, if you want to swap cake/biscuit recipes then I’m all ears.

Do you have any vegan butter icing recipes?

I’m also interested in a lemon curd replacement if such a thing exists.

Well, good for you I say.

Do you eat much sugary stuff?

What supplements do you take, if any?

I without doubt get comments when I ask for a vegan menu and order a soft drink. Always.

You need to start going out with different people I'd say.

@DatingIsDifficult i just spotted this recipe & knew I’d seen someone asking about lemon curd, it might be worth a go.

@HelpIneedsomebodywontyouplease I think I’m a little bit in love with you right now. Thank you so much!

I'm a sober vegan. I have epilepsy and my meds mean I can't drink or else my story might be different. I ignored the rules when I was a late teen but have been sober for decades. I don't feel dull and boring; I have a laugh with my mates and it doesn't worry me that they're knocking back the booze. I'm not going to force my choices on others. They've got their lives, I've got mine.
