Plant Based Milk For Kids?

organicoatmilk · 19/03/2022 11:10

I'm wanting to cut dairy out of our family's diet as much as possible. DH and I already drink soy milk but I'm wondering what the best plant based option for children is?

Soya milk, fortified with calcium, b12 and iodine is the most similar in terms of protein content to cows milk, most of the other plant milks are mostly fortified water.
I follow Unnatural vegan on YouTube and she does a lot of videos on good vegan nutrition for children. this one is useful.

I have just switched for DS as he is dairy intolerant and we use Alpro growing up milk

Mine like Oatly oat milk best.

Not rice due to arsenic.

Not soya if your child is male.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 19/03/2022 14:29

In the fridge we have unsweetened soya for cooking, sweetened soya for cereal, oat milk for tea/coffee and vanilla soya for drinking (when it's on offer)

Mine drink Mighty Milkology whole milk. It’s on offer in Sainsbury’s at the moment

The soya thing has been disproved

We love the Oatly oat milk, and the barista version is really good too. Oatly do a kind of creme fraiche and cream as well - which we often buy because the taste, consistency, and texture is just right as dairy alternatives.

MollyRover · 31/03/2022 12:57

I love almond. Always go for the unsweetened version.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/03/2022 12:59

Sorry to hijack: I’ve tried several alternatives but they just don’t taste right in hot drinks. Which would people say is the closest taste to dairy?

Stellaris22 · 31/03/2022 13:00

We drink oat milk and DD can't taste the difference with hot chocolate.

DS is under a dietician as has a (anaphylactic) allergy to milk & Soya. We've always been advised to do a 'full fat / barista version' of oat milk.
Oatly Baristia is fortified with calcium, Vit D etc and has always been a fav here.
