Fake bacon - is it all horrid?

Dd is working hard towards becoming a vegan - we tried some fake bacon today and it looked and tasted unpleasant- her comment was it was like a bad frazzle! I was a vegetarian for 20+ years but never ate imitation meat (or whatever it’s called).

Are there any fake bacon products which have a decent taste / texture or should we give up the search?

Sometimes people are getting fake bacon, I also taste one bad bacon, then only I knew it that is fake one. Really terrible taste.

You can make a kind of bacon substitute by marinading finely sliced tofu in a kind of smokey sauce. There are loads of recipes online and it's very nice in a blt.

I make my own. Press a block of firm tofu. Make a dressing to your taste of liquid smoke/soy sauce/mushroom ketchup/maple syrup/ brown sugar/bit of tomato purée/glug of oil. Cut the tofu into half centimetre wide slices. Line up the tofu on a baking sheet (I line it with greased brown shinny baking paper) and brush the slices generously with dressing. Bake in a hot oven to your favoured texture - it will go,as crisp and chewy as you like. It's very salty (I guess pig bacon is too) so I try not to eat the whole lot.

I have two friends who turned Vegan due to health reasons and have actually now opened their own cafe/restaurant. They make their own 'Fake-'n' which I think is revolting. But then these were two people who liked eating meat but gave it up for health reasons.

Their bacon is textured, chewy and meaty and they pride themselves on that. They use this as a selling point and criticise what they call 'plastic' bacon as in the Quorn range, as just one example.

But I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat meat because I don't like the texture and chewiness of meat, so the 'plastic' untextured stuff is perfect for me.

What’s the health issue they had that made them turn vegan?

@Crazykatie

I can never understand why vegans want to eat fake ultraprocessed meat. The manufacturing probably causes more pollution than the genuine bacon, if you’re going vegan eat simple unprocessed food there are plenty of options.
Are you PB?

If not... off you trot. Thank you

What’s PB?

My husband (not a meat-eater but not vegan) says the M&S veggie bacon is the best and my younger DD (full meat eater prefers eating that than real bacon)

Agree with those who say smoked tofu. Taifun brand with sesame seeds is my absolute favourite.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 19/06/2022 17:32

Oh yes tofu! I did it yesterday!

Smoked tofu sliced as thinly as possible, fried in a pan, once it's crisping turn down the heat and add a mixture of soy sauce, smoked paprika and maple syrup. Absolutely bloody divine.

DD quite liked the Richmond one. I tried in in a "BLT" with thick granary bread and didnt hate it. Not something we wwould get every week, but i might get it again sometime.
