Did your babies a algae DHA supplement from birth?

Hi,

We are about to be new parents! I have taken an algae based DHA supplement throughout my pregnancy. I am curious about when I should begin supplementing my daughter with DHA?

I know they recommend supplementing with vitamin D from birth (if breast fed). Is it the same with DHA?

Also I can see once they hit six months they are supposed to be supplemented with A, C and D as per the NHS guidelines. But will my vegan infant also need to take supplements for B-12 and Iodine?

Thanks. I have been vegan for over six years, we have a good understanding of nutrition but I am completely out of my depth with children. We don’t always eat that healthily (vegan for the animals, not our health) so have always take a multi. If anyone could recommend any good resources or books on children’s nutrition I would appreciate. 😊

Babies should only have breast milk or infant formula from birth. Either will contain everything they need. You should NOT be supplementing them with anything!

I would strongly suggest that you consult a dietician if you intend to raise your child as vegan from birth.

Basin that's not current advice. Regardless of veganism, the NHS currently advises that ALL breastfed babies have a vit d supplement from birth, and that all children aged 6m to 5 receive A, C, D supplement.

Op that didn't really answer your question, sorry!

My apologies! Vitamin D aside then, babies shouldn’t be plied with supplements.

From 6m (so weaning age) I would suggest professional advice for raising a vegan child as I would imagine there would be additional considerations needed.

Without judgement about ethical choices, I think it’s really important to ensure that a child with a restricted diet gets what they need.

Surely this is the case for all children. I don’t think we need to go rushing to a dietitian just because we’re vegan. Just need to make sure diet is appropriately planned and supplement for any short comings.

Hmm I’m not sure, unless you are sure you understand how the requirements of a rapidly growing and develop child differ from an adults and how you can ensure you can adequately meet their needs.

You admit yourself you are out of your depth.

I’m not saying a plant based diet is a lesser diet than any other, but it’s certainly one of the more restrictive and you definitely have to work harder at it if you want it to be balanced.
