Alternative mills for porridge

Hi, given up dairy and already veggie. Struggling to find a nice milk for porridge. Hemp didn't work too well and rice milk was a disaster as the porridge didn't cook but nice in tea. Don't like Coconut milk but almond is bearable. What would work best? Thanks!

Oatly is good

OccasionalNachos · 15/06/2018 07:51

Almond is my favourite for porridge, makes it really creamy.

Nanasueathome · 15/06/2018 07:52

Oat milk

Bridechilla · 15/06/2018 07:53

Try overnight oats with non dairy milk, resting overnight allows them to soak. If you're desperate to eat it hot you can always microwave

KirstenRaymonde · 15/06/2018 08:01

Soya is the most like cows milk in nutrition, it also tastes and behaves most like cows milk. Bear in mind they will all taste weird for a while though, while your taste buds adjust. You need to persist.

I can't have Oat milk as also on a low FODMAP diet. Such good fun SadMight try almond again. The rice milk has resulted in a gloopy mess and I just can't eat it.

Unsweetened vanilla almond is good. Or almond blends with coconut or cashew taste good too.

Oscha · 15/06/2018 08:05

Oat, then soy. But if you can’t have oat I’d just make it with water tbh.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/06/2018 08:47

I always make porridge with water and then put a splash of any non dairy milk O fancy. Always have made with water.

Also intrigued by Oatly being out but porridge ok? Unless you're having non-oat porridge? Don't know much about fodmap issues.

Tylerschair · 15/06/2018 09:39

Maybe try different almond milk flavours or add in extra ingredients? I make porridge with unsweetened roasted almond milk, a chopped apple (stewed in water to soften) and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Sometimes I add in a few chopped dates or sultanas. Delicious!

Tylerschair · 15/06/2018 09:42

Sorry, just saw you are on a low FODMAP diet so apples and dates/sultanas are out.

LiteraryDevil1 · 15/06/2018 10:37

Black dress oat milk contain high amounts of certain FODMAPs. Oats are ok at half a cup but anymore would make them high FODMAP. FODMAPs leech into water so I'm guessing that too many leech into the water whilst making oat milk and that's why it's not suitable.

I've bought some unsweetened almond milk so will try that again in porridge.
Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the info. Good luck on your quest to find the right one ☺️

I make mine with half a glass of Innocent smoothie. Usually the tropical one, or sometimes the strawberry and banana one. It sounds a bit odd but then you get fruit flavoured baby rice and it's basically the same thing! I think it tastes nice.

Oatly is really good for porridge and only has 3 ingredients Smile

LiteraryDevil1 · 18/06/2018 12:23

Almond milk was the most tolerable so far but needed extra syrup.

Quinoa milk or tigernut milk.
