I'm not actually vegan but dairy free so wondered if you friendly vegan lot could help with a recommendation of a good vegan flapjack recipe that actually works... they also seem to fall apart!

Just use a normal flapjack recipe but use vegetable margarine? I have never made flapjack with butter, ever. I usually use tesco baking margarine. It does say "may contain milk" on the packaging although it isn't listed on the ingredients so I guess it depends if you are OK with potential contamination or not. Other dairy free margarines are presumably available. Maybe try and find a block type margarine, rather than a spreadable one so that it helps stick the flapjack together when it sets.

Also, what syrup are you using. I usually use a mix of maple syrup and golden syrup. The golden syrup is a lot stickier, which also helps hold it together.

Stork Baking Block would be just the job, it's dairy free.

"Pure" marg is dairy free. If it falls apart you are putting in too much oats or not boiling the fat/syrup combo for long enough - it's not enough to just melt the fat you need to let it go a bit toffeeish.

Thanks for the tips. Some of the issue is that I really hadn't learned to bake before I was dairy free so I just don't what I'm trying to do / achieve with some of this stuff.

If I saw a recipe with butter in it I just wouldn't think I can substitute a vegan/ dairy free spread

Yep I agree that any good flapjack recipe works with Pure instead of butter.

Thanks - will try Pure or the Stork

I've been using this 'cereal bar' recipe for years and it gives consistently good, hardly any falling apart, results. And it doesn't use marg it uses oil, which is a bit healthier. Ok the sugar is less healthy, but can't have it all!

here it is

I add stewed apple and a couple of mashed bananas to the mix, reduce the Pure, and get lovely, soft, chewy flapjacks.
