Hotels A66 area for a one-night stopover

Hi, our usual once-a-year posh 'treat after a visit to the in-laws' hotel on the M6 is full of wedding guests on the night we want at the end of July. So we're looking for an alternative south of Penrith on the M6 or somewhere between there and midway along the M66. We're after a family room (2 small co-sleeping DDs) with an eatery so we can hook up the monitor or listen in on them. We've passed loads of inns on the blasted moors before but they all look a bit bleak and I feel I need personal experience as backup before I commit! Brough must have some nice places, as must Applelby I'd have thought..? So hard to tell from a badly framed pic on t'internet.

MN has never failed me with recommendations so far, so I have high hopes :-)

Gibbon Bridge Hotel near Clitheroe may suit you.

Also have a look at Pride of Britain hotels.

Hi lucindacarlisle thanks for the suggestions. I screwed up, sorry, I meant the A66, not the M66. D'oh. I regularly book accommodation for colleagues so I'm quite well up on websites to look at, but nothing quite beats a personal recommendation I find!

The Morritt Arms in Greta Bridge - maybe a bit far East, though - near Barnard Castle

Will check that out, thanks. Didn't want to get as far as Scotch Corner so still within the zone!
