Excellent if the weather is good. Really very difficult indeed if the weather is bad.

I have been on holiday near Lochinver quite a few times, twice with small children. Good if you like walking or watersports, wildlife, empty wild places in general. Kids can pootle in the streams and play on the fantastic beaches. Apart from that, if it rains it's an hour to Ullapool for the indoor swimming pool, or half an hour to the Rare breeds farm. and that's about it in poor weather.

but DP grew up going there every year and all his family goes there every year so they would sound more enthusiastic than me. I do like it, but when it rains and rains it is a little isolated.

There is a very fine pie shop in Lochinver though. And the beach at Achmelvich is v v beautiful.

Also depends when you are planning to go. Midges can be ghastly in summer, esp July/August.

We have often camped at Achmelvich, in fact the whole of DP's extended family has camped there for about a month every summer, for the last 50 years. It is a nice campsite and beach.
and yes the pies are good.

it's just very weather-dependent, in other parts of Scotland you have the occasional castle or indoor activity place, but up there it's outdoor activities or nothing.

Yes, that's very true. Assynt is very bush. But oh so beautiful too. I once camped at Achmelvich with friends and their 5 week old (first) baby. We walked down to Lochinver and she wailed at full tilt all the way back.
