South Devon - Any ideas for an extended stay this summer?

I'm planning on coming to the UK for the summer with DS (5) and spending about a month in Devon.

Are there any locals out there who could give me some ideas for not-too-expensive days out and nice "ordinary" things to do in the Teignbridge/Torbay/South Hams area? (I grew up there but have been in Germany for years so I'm a bit out of touch.) We won't have a car but are used to expeditions on public transport. I was thinking that there might be summer holiday stuff going on that we could join in with too?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
i am in Salcombe at the moment. A day in Salcombe on the beach at East Portlemouth or South Sands-you can take the ferry from Salc. Woodlands just outside Dartmouth is fab for a cloudy day. The steam train/ferry from Dartmouth/Kingswear. Zoo at Paignton. We have been to the aquarium at Plymouth today, there is also the Museum and Naval Boat Yard Trip. National Trust Houses. I could go on and on. Where are you staying?

Thanks for your reply, jb707. We'll be at my parents near Newton Abbot. Feel free to go on and on if you have more ideas. I'd quite like not to be depending completely on my parents for suggestions!

Salcombe-crabbing, Lifeboat and Museum under Tourist Info supper at Captain Flints.
Diggerland outside Exeter.
Swimming in the Lido at Plymouth.
Dartmouth Castle.
