it's been too long since I last had a proper stay, and the DS1 and 2 absolutely LOVED their week in Edinburgh 2yrs ago (yes in January lol) - the purpose of that trip was to have some time apart from H before we first separated - so not really a holiday.

Anyhow, I want to go again, would love to be close enough to Edinburgh to be able to go and "see" stuff at the Fringe Festival (and I have an old friend who has already said she'll have a load of free tickets for stuff I can have as well ), and visit some friends in Edinburgh.

BUT - would be kind of nice to travel maybe go other places so being in Edinburgh not really 100% essential.

So I need recommendations for somewhere cheap (yes yes yes I know August is expensive anywhere, and even more so around Edinburgh when the festival is one ) and cheerful that's got good(ish) public transport links to Edinburgh and.............

(please)

Well, how about North Berwick which is on the main railway line into Edinburgh and also has great beaches, the scottish seabird centre, Tantallon Castle, the museum of flight (nearby) and boat trips to the Bass Rock and is a great wee place.

Portabello which is actually in Edinburgh has a large sandy beach, promenade and Victorian swimming pool and Turkish Baths, but is slightly blackpooly. Buses run every 10 mins to the city centre and the area is less likely to book up during the festival.

Borders and East Neuk of Fife are good but further away and only have bus not train links.

Have you thought of staying in Glasgow? Just a train trip away......
